Dalton suggests 'perhaps English before Conquest'. Reginald Smith says 12th century. Eric Maclayan says Carolingian 8th, 9th, or 10th century or perhaps earlier. Dr. Minns suggests that the marks above figures are letters and with extreme bending forward of Virgin's figure suggests an Early Eastern origin. Professor A.B. Cook says the concentric circles of that sort are frequently found on Roman objects and lasted till quite a late time; Date: ?12 Century AD; ?8 Century AD; ?9 Century AD; ?10 Century AD.

Description (Physical description)
Square plaster seal impression of a jet seal matrix (1927.1221.1). On the die, the figure of Christ is shown on the cross with the Virgin Mary and St. John either side. In the top corner, there is a small motif. A band of lightly beaded gold-coloured metal runs around the top edge; the outer edge is wrapped in paper.
