Context (Related Documents)
TEMP.03052.2 reads: 'Made from the Royal George. Sunk at Spithead, August 29, 1782. She was the oldest first-rate ship in the service, built in 1755. To effect some repairs, she was laid on her side, and the port holes having been left open, and a sudden squall taking the ship, the water rushed in, and she sank so rapidly, that no time was given for signals of distress. At this fatal moment, Admiral Kempenfelt, and upwards of 12,00 persons were on board, of whom not more than about 300 were saved. The wood is a beautiful description of durable Oak, and forms a supper present from Weymouth. Manufactured by J. Medhurst, from Tunbridge Wells, of whom may be had articles made from the Wrecks of the Columbine & Abergavenny.'
