Description

Man's pair of red velvet trousers, part of a carnival outfit, with decoration on the front. Same design on each leg; floral pattern in gold thread; some flowers accented with green and purple velvet; flowers and leaves are raised using an insert of thick and firm card; stems made from rows of silver metal sequins attached with thread that is covered with metal coils; scattered metal sequins in between. Crowned and caped man under the waistband on each leg; head is made of card and painted with a moustached face; gold thread embroidered body, arms and legs; wearing maroon, cream and blue pantaloons. Leg openings are trimmed with pink and white woven strip with fringe; three button closure; interior is lined in undyed cotton.

Description (Physical description)
Pair of red, velvet breeches decorated only on the front. Both legs have the same design. There is a crowned and caped man, with a painted mustachioed face/head (as on the hat), with a gold thread embroidered body, arms and legs, and wearing maroon, cream and blue pantaloons. He is surrounded by floral motifs as described above, although utilizing silver coloured metal discs. The leg openings are edged with pink and white fringe. The inside of these breeches are in plain, undyed cotton.

This outfit has been accessioned twice, once in 1902 and once in 1904. E 1902.378 A-D is listed with less information in the accession register, whereas E 1904.224 names the same outfit, but in greater detail. The decision was taken to assume the 1902 IDNO for all of the objects, although some are marked with the 1904 IDNO and some are marked with both.
