Description (Physical description)
Original description for A-C, possibly from collector's notes: 'A: Bundle used as fertility charm or offering to spirits (?Pachamama or hill spirit), wrapped in plain brown warp-faced cloth with thin red and yellow warp stripes. It contains, maize, chuno, coca, wool, a shell, money, fat, beans (pallares), 'taco' (red earth for marking animals), white stone (powdered as medicinal), a ring, a brass charm, smooth stones (which 'sweat', very important), guayruro seeds (from tropical forest, red ones 'solteros' and red with black patch 'viridos'), brass llama-headed pin (bent into animal form), lumps of metal (hanaj-pacha-bala = above-earth-bullet =heavenly bullet) representing thunder spirit.
These and an animal foetus (not here) are present in every bundle of this sort. These are kept in the huts and brought out at ceremonies, especially Carnival and San Juan. August also is an important month, when the earth comes to life. They are widespread, but this example is from Winchiri, 50km east of Sicuani.
B: Bundle for same purposes as 'A' and from same place. Wrapped in coarsely-woven grey cloth, with a brown weft-stripe at each end. Contains coca leaves, dried flowers (claveles=pinks), bottle of wine with fat (vino con grasa), two bells, a brass medal of Our Lady, a bead, lead thunderbolt (hanaj-pocha-bala) and a brass pin (tupo).
C: Medicine bundle used by shaman (Curandero or paco). Wrapped in European handkerchief. Contains magnetic ore
(attracts money!), ?a mouse's nest, shells, coca, red and black beans of the guayruro plant (all red are solteros and those with black patch viados). From near Sicuani.'
