Description
Girl's shorts, trousers or pants, made from seal skin. Waistband of dehaired sealskin with main section of sealskin with hair to the outside; two vertical stripes down the front trimmed with bands of white hair alternating with dehaired skin; hems trimmed with bands of white hair alternating with dehaired skin; paired tassels of black skin from legs; two ties of cream dehaired skin at back of waist.

Catalogue card for 1931.1164 A-D: 'Complete outfit of an unmarried girl. For make etc see Index Card [19]31.1162. The cord in front marked A is for tying round to keep the baby from slipping down the back - as girls carry babies as well as their mothers.'

Description (Physical description)
Judy Hall: 'Trousers, short, for woman. Back is 10.2 cm higher than curved front. Made from 8 pieces of sealskin with the fur to the exterior. A single piece forms each side of front and _ of back; four pieces are sewn to centre back; front is made from two pieces seamed vertically at the centre. Five narrow strips of white haired skin (fox?) alternate with five strips of dehaired dark brown sealskin to form bands around each leg (2.6 cm wide) and vertically down each side of front (2.5 cm wide). Band of furred sealskin is sewn around edge of leg. Paired fringe of dark brown dehaired sealskin is sewn to centre front of leg. Dehaired sealskin forms a casing (1.3 cm wide) around upper edge. Ends of dehaired sealskin thong emerge through two holes in casing at centre back. Structural sewing is with sinew.'
