Description

Copper alloy Aucissa type brooch. Semi-circular bow with a central ridge running along its outer edge. The head is asymmetrical with a knop protruding on one side. The hinged pin is still present and moves freely into the catch plate which terminates in a pronounced knop. The surface is patinated with areas of the original colour showing through.

Accession Register notes that this donation was given by Lady Smith Woodward in 'memory of Sir Arthur Smith Woodward'. Palaeontologist Sir Arthur Smith Woodward (1864-1944) was Keeper of the Geological Department of the British Museum from 1901-1924, and this is likely to be his widow, Maud Leanora Ida Smith Woodward, nee Seeley.
