Description

Plaster seal impression of a seal matrix with circular face. The central design depicts a shield of arms, a shield bendy with three lions rampant below and three lions rampant above, two and one. The shield is the Arms of Bohun, used by Humphrey de Bohun, fourth Earl of Hereford. There is another smaller shield of arms on either side of the central shield, and a Bohun swan above. The central design is separated from the inscription by a beaded line. The inscription begins with a cross pattée and reads 'S' HVMFRIDI DE BOhVN [COM]ITI hEREFORDIE ET ESSEXIE' ('THE SEAL OF HUMPHREY DE BOHUN EARL OF HEREFORD AND ESSEX'). The inscription is fragmentary.

This impression represents the reverse of a seal used by Humphrey de Bohun, fourth Earl of Hereford, to sign the Barons' Letter of 1301, denying papal authority over Scotland. Two copies of the letter survive in the National Archives (E 26).
