Description
Large iron cowbell. Made from a single piece of sheet iron bent into a slightly bulbous square shape with a seam down each side and fixed with rivets creating an open bottom. The clapper is a length of iron bent around an internal suspension bar and widened at the lower end. A horizontal strap suspension loop runs across the top and a finely oscillating band of applied metal decorates the surface. A short crack is visible to the corner of one of the curved faces.

Accession Register for 1914.418 A-O: 'A set of fifteen bells of oval section with contracted mouths, formed of riveted iron plates shewing much wear. All are similarly decorated with a raised band, some shewing traces of brass plating, and are provided with elongate or knobbed tongues, and stout flat loops which are double in two examples.'
