Description

Tin scabbard component with loop and ring, possibly the throat or mid-hanger. The object has a squared mouth and sides, with asymmetrical faces front a back; the front face has an elongated bottom edge, tapering in a scalloped fashion to a point, whilst the back face is rectangular with a ‘W’ shaped lower edge; the surface of both faces feature repoussé decoration: the front features a border within which floral motifs surround a central circular flower-like motif; the back features a border within which sits a centred, domed circle surrounded by radiating debossed petals. One vertical side of the object features a small, cylindrical tube through which a closed ring is looped; the opposing vertical edge is damaged with areas of loss.

Catalogue card description for Z 27240 [A-G]: 'Assorted hand-guards, chapes and other 17th and 18th century sword fittings. 2 heavy brass hand guards, one marked 'Wilburton, Isle of Ely; 2 iron guards are marked 'Bartlow'; 2 tin fittings, one from scabbard top, the other from top of handle; 2 bronze chapes, Ixworth, 1910.'
