Marques Hanalei Marzan visited MAA in 2006 when was participating in the opening of Steven Hooper’s Pacific Encounters exhibition at Sainsbury Research Unit in Norwich, and they may have acquired this from him then.

Marques Hanalei Marzan (b. 17 March 1979) is a Hawaiian and Oceanic fibers culture bearer and contemporary visual artist and Cultural Advisor at the Bishop Museum. He was born and raised in Kāne'ohe, Hawaiʻi. On his website, he describes his vision for his work as bridging 'innovations of the past with those of the present, creating dialogues within his work and community engagement that speak to the vibrancy and dynamism of culture.'
