Description

Large, shallow, ovular dish of woven plant fibre, with a thickened, bevelled rim formed of strands of fibre wrapped with cane and coated with mud. The inside of the dish has natural colour wefts of varying widths and broad, brown stained warps. The base of the dish is coated with mud that contains plant fibres.

An old handwritten label was found attached to Z 21245 A. The label reads 'Banyaruanda', which is believed to be the cultural group, Banyarwanda, and 'Kisolo. Kigezi. Uganda.', which is believed to be the location of origin of the dishes numbered Z 21245 A and Z 21245 B. The cultural group, place, and production fields have been updated accordingly.

The Banyarwanda are Hutus, Tutsis and Batwa who all speak Kinyarwanda and live along the Rwandan border in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.
