Description

A small, narrow drum with a cylindrical wooden body that tapers in slightly at the base. There is a skin over the top and bottom, with some fur still remaining in places. The skin is held taut by lacing, made from strings of twisted hide, threaded through the closely set holes round the edges of the top and bottom skins, and drawn tightly together. There is a corroded metal rivet, possibly iron, through the bottom skin and the side of the drum. There are two handles on one side at the top, with a hide thong between.

Catalogue card description for 1948.2360 A-B: 'Two drums, the body of a cylindrical piece of wood, with furry skin over each end. The skin is held taut by sinews laced tightly through the closely set holes round the edges of the top and bottom skins, and drawn tightly together. The top circumference is larger than the bottom, and near the top on one side are two small loope handles, made of sinew and a cord between for carrying. A: Wide and squat. B: Narrow and taller than A.'
