Context (Found together / assemblage)
Found, bagged separately, in a box with material from Darfur, Sudan excavated by Dr. Ibrahim Musa Mohammed (1979-1980 and 1981-1982). This confusion likely took place when both the Buhen collection and the Darfur collection were stored at the Department of Oriental Studies in the 1980s to at least the late 1990s. The Buhen material appears to have been owned by MAA but were either assigned late Z numbers or only accessioned once they physically returned to MAA in 2003. The Darfur material was never owned by MAA and, in collaboration with Dr Musa Mohammed, was transported to Berlin for study; from there it will return to Sudan. This sherd was extracted from the bag of Darfur material (temporary number DAR007.04), moved to MAA and assigned a TEMP number. It is not currently known whether it ever had a MAA accession number but, given the history of the Buhen collection, it appears unlikely and it may need to be assigned a permanent accession number.

Context (Related Documents)
Original bag, found in 2017 by Eleanor Wilkinson, read:
'H9.23 (1442)
K8.54'
Only this sherd (K8-54) was found in the bag. A second sherd was also found in the bag but was clearly marked '84' on one side and 'KM' on the other, which is consistent with Dr Musa Muhammed's markings for the site of Kutum, Sudan. Therefore that sherd was moved to join the rest of the Darfur material (see earlier note). The location of 'H9.23 (1442)' from Buhen is unknown.
