Description

A beater, with a wooden handle and a hide head. The handle is long ad cylindrical, slightly flare out at the terminal. The head is a pointed oval shape, positioned at a slight angle, made from hide which is stitched in place with plant fibre. Used with 1996.105 B. Hide is disintegrating in places.

Context (Acquisition Details)
1996.105-8 were purchased by the Museum at Christie's, South Kensington (lot 253) in the "Tribal Art" sale on Tuesday 21 March 1995. The total price paid, including premium, was £458.75. All items are stated in the catalogue to have been collected by Baron Adolphe-Henri-Albert de Macar (1847-1918), Lieutenant-Colonel d'Infanterie, between 1885 and 1888. The above group of artefacts, which had remained in the family's possession, was sent for sale by one of his descendants.
