Description

Libis. The head piece of padded cotton armour for horse of sub-triangular shape. Made from quilted cotton in light and dark blue, red and white in a patchwork pattern of squares and triangles. There are cut outs for the ears and eyes. All the edges are trimmed with light blue cotton. Six black cord ties around the top section of the head piece

Context (Acquisition Details)
The Arkell collection was first deposited at MAA in 1937. In 1954, some material was transferred and gifted to the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford. The rest of the original deposit was gifted to MAA. New accession numbers were not assigned to the collection, so Arkell collection objects continue to be known by their D numbers, despite no longer being on deposit.

Context (Acquisition Details)
Anthony John Arkell (the field collector and donor) was Assistant Governor of Darfur, 1932-1937, based in Al-Fashir. He assembled a large collection of objects while working in the administration of Darfur, which was shipped to MAA in 1937. Further information was supplied by Arkell, recorded in a document in MAA's archive 'AR8-1-1-Arkell Darfur Sudan Collection List'.
