Description

Oval painted hide war shield. Curved wooden spine on reverse forming a central grip, both points are connected by a leather thong which preserves the longitudinal curve. The grip is protected by an additional layer of hide on the inside with toothed perimeter. There is a small leather loop close to one edge on the reverse. The front face is painted with white, red and black curves with a central band of diamonds. The perimeter is bound with leather thong and a slash through the face has been repaired with the same thonging, one slash has not been repaired.

Oval painted hide war shield. Present day pattern Akikuyu - Tetu district - fighting shield, this pattern has been copied from the Masai and is of the pattern now used in the Tetu district. These shields are from Nduni's people who live at the foot of the bamboos on the Aberdare range.
