Context (Analysis)
'Neck ornament made from brown beads tied with strings. Beads are drilled with a hole so that they may be strung together using strings made from sisal or tree-bark. Worn by Embu children.
'Educated at Wellington College and the Royal Military Academy, Orde Brown was seconded to the Colonial Office as an Assistant District Commissioner in the British East Africa Protectorate (later Kenya), 1909-1915, during which time he must have collected the Embu necklace. This period corresponded with the beginning of the first World War. From Kenya he subsequently served in Tanganyika till his retirement in 1931.'
