Catalogue card 1982.607[.1-4]: 'Made by Fatuma the wife of Mohamed Mbaruk Wafundi (Jadi) of Shela. She does not normally make fans for sale (they are made by women). The dye is bought in the shops (imported from India). Made from palm leaves. Special ones, like these are given to a bride for use on the wedding night and the groom is fanned by similar ones when he attends the stick dance (Kirumbizi) which is also one of the wedding activites. A wife may also fan her husbands' food to cool it before he eats.

Description (Physical description)
Upepeo or fan used at weddings, made by Fatuma. Square fan woven from strips of palm leaf on a handle of cane; strips dyed with green, purple and indigo creating a checkered cross; small loop of twisted fibre near the top of the handle.
