Description
Papel picado. Piece of perforated tissue paper made for Day of the Dead. Paper features a horizontal design of two skeletons kissing under trees. Edges are zig-zagged, and a floral design is along bottom. Red in colour, which represents warriors, mothers who died in childbirth, the blood of life, and (for Christian celebrants) the blood of Jesus. Made by punching out the design with sharp chisels on up to fifty sheets of tissue at one time. The holes in each paper allows for the souls of the deceased to travel through and visit.
