Context (Analysis)
Although 1927.681 A-B came into the museum as from Freckenham, there is reason to believe that they are actually from the cemetery at Tuddenham. They are both illustrated in Ridgeway's (posthumous) 1931 publication as from 'a grave, Tuddenham'. Although this could conceivably have been an error, the information that was recorded on the original catalogue card ('... found along with shield boss, spears, knife, sword, beads, silver ring, bronze pins and rings, etc.') is very similar to the material found in Tuddenham (see records 1927.680 A-E). Finally, although there is no date given on the catalogue card for when Ridgeway found or acquired this material, in 1911 the Victoria County History for Suffolk lists only two known brooches (1893.7.1-2) from Freckenham. Therefore Tuddenham has been tentatively added to the Place field, and Freckenham made tentative.
