Description

Mia or throwing knife used for hunting and warfare. The short handle is made in one piece with the primary blade and terminates in a short pip. The primary blade is long and curved in an unequal 'S' shape after the point where it joins the fork; the straight section is sharpened only on the outer edge while the curved section is double-bladed. The one fork is single-edged and has a rounded end; decorated with three short grooves close to where it joins the primary blade.

Description for 1975.34 A-I: 'mia: throwing knife; mia are used for hunting and warfare. The knife is thrown at such a height that it catches the legs of the prey and breaks them. The handle and fork of the knife fit comfortably over the shoulder where it is carried. Not all blacksmiths make mia because a special kuga, medecine, must be learned before one can attach the fork to the handle.
