Context (CMS Context)
On 26 March 1758, a donation of 'medals, urns, and other curiosities' from a Mr Bromsall was received by the Master of St John's College. The discovery of a letter referring to this donation (see Daniel article) was what led to the 1936 discovery of an old cupboard of 'many coins, some pottery and a number of miscellaneous objects', from which the pottery was ultimately deposited in MAA. It is possible that this urn was one of those donated by Mr Bromsall, but there is presently no way of ascertaining for sure nor is the findspot of the urn secure. The St John's cricket field site was excavated in 1888, long after the Bromsall donation, although stray finds could have been found earlier. Bromsall has therefore been tentatively added in the Source field and the Place field remains tentative.
