Description

Ceramic female figure (.1) and three-tier vegetable stall (.2). The figure is clothed in a pink and green trimmed dress with blue apron. The vegetable stall includes ceramic and paper vegetables; cauliflower, tomatoes, carrots, watermelon etc. Interior of figure's dress is lined with Italian language newspaper.

Letter from Franca Vincent, Exhibit Designer, 21 February, 1989 to Dr Paul Sant Cassia notes, 'As requested, with the £120. that I was granted by the Museum, I have purchased for the Museum's collection two terracotta presepe from San Gregorio Armeno, Napoli, The cost of the artefacts are as follows:
carmello (camel) cost £60,000 lira = £30 British sterling
veditriche de divadura (vendor of vegetable) cost £180,000 lira = £90 British sterling
I was assisted with the purchasing the presepe by Dr Stefano Mazzoleni and Sr Umberto de Gregorio.'

However while ceramic and paintedfigure appears older, it may have been made in an older style or the skirt may have been relined.
