Description

Cast copper alloy small long brooch in two pieces. Square headplate with a square flat top knob, decorated with two rows of parallel circular punchmarks through the centre. Two semicircular flat side knobs decorated with one row of circular punchmarks, now very faded. Arched bow, broken through the middle; square lappets. Rectangular foot decorated with a raised transverse ridge and flaring towards the base, decorated with two rows of parallel circular punchmarks. Corroded iron pin present in pin bar lug and attached to the catchplate.

Context (Analysis)
As part of research for the publication 'Decorative Punchmarks on Non-Ferrous Artefacts from Barrington Edix Hill Anglo-Saxon Cemetery...' (1996), John Hines visited MAA and took Xantopren-L blue (silicon-based rubber) peels from many of the objects subsequently listed in Catalogue 2 of that publication. It is not known whether this is one of the objects from which a peel was taken or when.

The Redfern Collection was presented to MAA by Lady Ryan of Hintlesham Hall, in memory of the late Mr William Redfern. It is described in the Annual Report as an 'important series of local antiquities of the Bronze Age and later, which [Redfern] had collected'.
