Context (Analysis)
When this collection was accessioned, the findspot was listed as 'a cemetery on the side of a mountain in the tribe land of the Komani in North Albania' without naming the cemetery. However, the mention of Alexandre Degrand confirms that it is the cemetery of Komani (ancient Dalmace). It was originally identified in 1867 and first excavated in 1898 by Alexandre Degrand, former French consul in Shkodra, and unofficial digs took place over several decades. The Place field has been updated from 'Komani District' accordingly. The original Period was given as 'Post Roman' and a tentative date range given as 'possibly 4th-6th century'; the Period field has been amended to Late Antique and Early Medieval, but needs further investigation. See Etleva Nallbani (2017). 'Early Medieval North Albania: New Discoveries, Remodeling Connections'. Adriatico altomedievale (VI–XI secolo): Scambi, porti, produzioni. pp. 311-46.
