Description
Rectangular wooden box with hinged lid. The top of the lid is inscribed with "St.Helena 1901" and depicts a crest including a bird, lion, and man with rifle; sides of box inscribed with "Made by Boer prisoner of war"; copper alloy hinges held in place by iron screws; two metal pins in the front wall to hold the lid in place.

Described by the donors as a family heirloom. Possibly bought by Robin Stevenson's grandparents, Ralph (Rafe) and Rachel, at a charity fair. Inherited by Robin's mother, Lavinia Antonia Turkingen/Turkington and then by Robin. There is no family link to South Africa.

Description (Physical description)
Rectangular wooden box with hinged lid inscribed with "St. Helena 1901" and "Made by Boer prisoner of war." The top of the lid is inscribed with "St.Helena / 1901" and depicts a crest with a bird, lion and man with rifle. Around the sides of the box is inscribed "Made by / Boer prisoner / of war." Hinges are made of metal and screwed in to the base and lid. There are also two metal pins on the front edge which hold the lid shut.
