Description
One of fifteen carved clubs. B: a short mace, (following Buck), cylindrical shaft, with widened head carved with 9 cylindrical rows of large knobs/spikes, and below this, 2 rows of smaller knobs., to resemble the pandanus fruit. With pierced triangular lug with apex, through which is strung a 3ply plaited suspension cord of sinnet. Called a fa' aaufala by Buck. . One spike chipped off and missing, with various nicks and chips on the remaining spikes.

Thirteen carved clubs.
' These clubs were found undifferentiated. Suffixes now added, but these need to be written on the actual object too.
A: Ear shaped club, fa' alautalinga, with crescent shaped head. Decorated with zigzag and line carving in fields on head and shaft. Shaft is cylindrical in cross section at base, changing to rhomboidal near the head. Two small square paper labels, adhered to shaft, with serrated edges and double blue border. Handwriting in pencil on both is illegible, but one may read ' Cent.. 2" .

Two rectangular paper labels adhered to shaft, the upper one reads " D.97.8 Samoa (Brill) a.v. Hugel Dep.1897" . The other label notes " Samoa 206 I [?1 in Roman numerals] 206" with illegible pencil marks, possibly " to" . One spike chipped off and missing, with various nicks and chips on the remaining spikes.
C: Billateral toothed cub, with bevelled spikes, called a fa' alaufa' i by Buck, and noted as resembling the banana leaf. The shaft cylindrical in cross section, changing to rhomboidal near the head. Bound in sections Distal flange with pierced triangular lug with apex, the sides not reaching the edges. The shaft bears three bands of 4 loops of plaited sinnet fibre, knotted to secure their position, another held fast and tthree further sections of looped sinnet which are movable. Labelled on shaft with printed paper label reading, ' 52' and written on the shaft is " O.XIII.1" . Minor scratches and chip on handle.
D: Coconut stalk club, handle is circular in cross-section with rhomboidal head, with double collar. The head is decorated with line and notched designs in fields. Projection at base, pierced. Old adhered label, square with serrated edges, illegible, ?" ...ff " and in pencil in another hand, but with parts of the label missing " ..ill [?Brill] 15" . Another similar label on the head notes " 15" .
E: a short mace, (following Buck), cylindrical shaft, with widened head carved with 8 cylindrical rows of large knobs/spikes, and below this, 4 rows of smaller knobs., to resemble the pandanus fruit. With pierced triangular lug with apex. Called a fa' aaufala by Buck. Four spikes missing, and three badly chipped. Old rectangular paper label notes " D97.9 Samoa (Brill.) a.v.Hugel Dep. 1897" . Another label on handle notes " II10 II [label missing]"
F: throwing type club with fluted head, similar to the Fijian i ula, but without the tavatava carving at the base. Carved with horizontal and diagomal bands of zigzag carvings from midway up shaft to the head. Plaited sinnet loop, knitted at end, on shaft. Flat base. No lug. Old laper label notes " D.97.13 Samoa (Brill) a.von Hugel Dep. 1897" .

There are two catalogue cards with the number 1923.113, both of which refer to Samoan clubs purchased from the Von Hugel collection and donated by Clarke. However, one lists thirteen clubs, while the other refers to fifteen clubs.
