Context (Analysis)
Caton Thompson notes that 'Dr Leonard Hawkes, F.G.S., kindly examined these three axes [1951.661-1951.662 A-B], and considers them to be true jade. Their specific gravity is between 2.97 and 3.00, which seems to preclude jadeite, which has a specific gravity of 3.3... The source of the jade is unknown. It occurs in metamorphosed rocks of unusual type, and until the rocks of south-west Arabia have been geologically mapped and examined it may be unwise to assume that our specimens came necessarily from the known jade localities in Turkestan, Siberia or Kashmir' (pp. 144-145).
