Child's hat or headwear with an animal face. Comprising a band of black silk cloth with checkered purple-and-green lining. The appliquéd animal featured at front, possibly a lion, has bushy eyebrows, large eyes, a yellow nose, protruding teeth and red lips.

One of a collection of objects collected by Miss. Carpenter and donated by Mrs. Claydon. According to the catalogue card for 1979.266: 'Miss Carpenter, who originally lived in Wiltshire, worked for the China Inland Mission in Szechuan from 1927-1945; during which time she collected these various objects. On her return to England she moved to Norfolk. On her death these objects were left to Mrs. Claydon (of Shipdham, Norfolk), her next-door-neighbour, through whom the collection was given to this museum.'

Description (Physical description)
One of two children's masks, mostly made out of black silk. This example represents a being with large teeth and white bushy eyebrows, probably made from animal hair. The facial features are trimmed with thin strips of metal, sewn into place with white thread. The teeth are made from folded pieces of cotton and protrude from the mouth. The interior is lined with a green, pink, purple and white chequered fabric.
