Description (Physical description)
Paper and wooden models for burning at funerals in order to give the dead the use of the articles in the other world. They comprise a lantern, a table, a pair of shoes and one odd shoe, five cut out garments, three cut out figures, a fan, nine coins, a pair of scissors, a packet of joss sticks, a prayer sail and five unidentified objects.

The 24th annual report (1909) reads, 'Offerings burnt at funerals, viz.: paper models of complete outfits of male and female clothing, of opium smoking requisites, of fruits, of a "shoe" or silver ingot, of money, etc.'.

Context (Found together / assemblage)
These items are all believed to be from the same collection (ie. that donated by Blaikie), although they were found later among the Folklore Collection. According to the description on the catalogue card, this collection is supposed to include an opium smoker' s kit (including pipe, lamp cleaners. tray and boxes of opium), shoe, heels and bandages for a woman' s bound feet and a " shoe" or ingot of silver. These items may be those which remain unidentified or may have gone missing (Alison McKeating, 12 1 1994).

Description (Physical description)
Paper table or altar, used in funerary rites as a gift for the deceased to use in the afterlife. The paper table or altar is long and rectangular in shape and has been painted purple with gold, painted scroll decorations on the front of the piece. There are two circular holes on the top of the table. All made from one section of paper, folded to create a table with two legs.
