It contains three items: A broad brimmed hat of black horsehair gauze ("kat") (B), with flat crown (Puritan type). An extinguisher shaped, oilskin cover (drawn over the hat in wet weather) (C). A headband of horsehair (D), worn under hat to hold up man's hair.'

Context (Analysis)
According to Dr Keith Howard of SOAS, University of London, the hat is known as a 'kat' and 'manufacturing process preserved as an intangible cultural asset - plenty of publications available'. (Korea Museums Group visit to CUMAA, 19/02/1994).

Description (Physical description)
Broad brimmed hat of black horsehair gauze ('gat'), secured to reeds, which have been lacquered black. The hat has a narrow, flat crown (Puritan style design). There are two long, flexible strips attached to the inner rim of the hat, which would secure the hat under the chin.

Kat. Broad brimmed hat of black horsehair gauze. Circular, black lacquered reeds at top and bottom of crown and outer rim. Tall, narrow crown with two long black gauze horsehair ribbons attached to base with white cotton.
