The Picken Collection was purchased from Dr Laurence Ernest Rowland Picken in 1977 by the University of Cambridge, with grants from the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Evans fund and the Crowther-Beynon fund. As documented in the Picken Collection Borrowing Ledger, W/16/1, the collection was used extensively for external teaching activities within the University of Cambridge from March 1977 until May 1990. Two boxes with documentation concerning the Picken collection are located in the MAA archives.

'This item was stored with a number of items from 'Picken Box 71, Korea', which included a number of items of varying mixed media, including plastic musical instruments, brass bells and percussion instruments. Some have been moved to boxes of similar type objects and some have been kept together'.
