Context (Amendments / updates)
Eliza von Hugel's cousin William Hurrell Mallock (1849- 1923), the novelist & economics writer, lived at 5 St Mary’s Passage, Cambridge. He was the son of her maternal aunt Margaret Froude (1810- 1883) who married 1884 the Rev. William Mallock, Rector of Cheriton Bishop (1810- 1886). W.H. Mallock died without issue, leaving his estate to sister Mary Margaret Mallock, who also gifted material to the museum. Some of her gifts (1887.74) can be connected to the Leverian Museum Collection from Widdicombe House, Devon, via lilustrations by Sarah Stone when exhibited in the Leverian Museum in the 1890s.
Margaret Froude's sister-in-law, Catherine Henrietta Elizabeth Froude (nee Holdsworth) (b.?1878) was the daughter of Arthur Howe Holdsworth of Widdicombe House, Devon, who purchased material at the Leverian sale through John Rowe, (a clergyman from Bristol). Rowe purchased on behalf of his brother-in-law Richard Hall Clarke, of Bridwell House, Uffculme, Devon and Clarke’s son-in-law, Arthur Howe Holdsworth of Widdicombe House.
This may be the Persian bow purchased by Rowe at the sale of the Levan Museum, No. 2402, noted by Kaeppler: 2011, p. 238) and the '5 oriental arrows' purchased by Rowe after the sale on 16th Jan 1807, noted by Kaeppler: 2011, p. 245, Lot No. 2337)
