Context (Found together / assemblage)
N.B. a small piece of wood fell out of the lock mechanism when handling this object. Presumably it has splintered from the lock rail at some point, and has been bagged separately to be kept with this object.

Description (Physical description)
Lock rail, including lockset, from a large door or gate. Comprises a large oblong plank of wood, with two holes in one end and rim-mounted half-mortise lockset built into the other, wider end. The lockset is corroded and seemingly fused solid, but otherwise appears complete. It is built into a hollowed mortise, with an escutcheon covering a double acting lever lock mechanism operating a deadlock bolt. The spring-loaded lever is now partially exposed, but may once have been totally covered by an additional protective plate. A long drillpin protrudes through the keyhole in the escutcheon, showing this to be a one-sided lock mechanism, and is mounted via a joining plate on the back side of the lock rail. The lock rail is inscribed 'AD 1440' on its mortised side.
