Community produced a statement of intent for the museum to hold along with textiles produced for the museum collection. Statement is signed by all members of the women's leadership committee of Santa Maria de Chirripur and is held in the museum archive.

Context (Field collection)
Purchased by Callie Vandewiele during her PhD field reserach as part of a Crowther-Beynon Grant from the womens committee in the coffee cooperative Santa Maria de Chirripur in the Alta Verapaz of Guatemala. Vandewiele worked with the cooperative leadership committee to get permission for the collection and the loom was woven by Josefa Xi Coy de Quiix who was asked by the community to create a demonstration huipil and loom featuring a wide range of brocade patterns and to reflect the weaving style of the community in the work. Belt is part of loom.

Exhibited in Looms of our Grandmothers: Picb'il textiles from Guatemala, 16 May – 6 October 2019. The cord and belt were placed next to the demonstration loom, 2019.15, to suggest how it was tied and used in situ. Label noted for 2019.15-17 'These looms are tied to posts and the broad plastic strap worn around the seated weavers’ waist creates tension on the vertical warp threads. This example was made for the Museum on behalf of the cooperative Santa Maria de Chirripur.
Josefa Xi Coy de Quiix included many common patterns. These are (from the base of loom nearest the strap): Stars, Hummingbird on corn plant, Spider, Woman, Dog footprint, Pacaya leaf, Figure of eight, Big eyed bird and Butterfly.'

White nylon padded belt for backstrap loom. Twisted loops at each end; faded blue bands on the loops and green band bellow the loop on one side. Part of 2019.15.
