Description
Picb'il style on single headle backstrap loom with partial cotton textile; wooden beater & loom end bars. Bamboo heddle stick, shed rod and tension rod. Orange tree spines as tension pins, Cotton cord used as selvedge ties & heddle thread. Features various patterns in white brocade, spaced evenly across length of textile such as Star, Corn plant with rings in between, spider, women with arms raised, dog footprint, 'pato de perro', pacaya leaf, figure eight, big eyed bird, butterfly, star, hummingbird sitting on corn plant or milpa.

The community produced a statement of intent for the museum to hold along with textiles produced for the museum collection. The tatement is signed by all members of the women's leadership committee of Santa Maria de Chirripur and is held in the museum archive.

Purchased by Callie Vandewiele during her PhD field reserach as part of a Crowther-Beynon Grant from the womens committee in the coffee cooperative Santa Maria de Chirripur in the Alta Verapaz of Guatemala. Vandewiele worked with the cooperative leadership committee to get permission for the collection and the loom was woven by Josefa Xi Coy de Quiix who was asked by the community to create a demonstration huipil and loom featuring a wide range of brocade patterns and to reflect the weaving style of the community in the work.

Picb'il style on single headle backstrap loom with partial cotton textile produced in the community of Santa Maria de Chirripur, in the Alta Verapaz of Guatemala. Wooden beater & loom end bars. Bamboo heddle stick, shed rod and tension rod. Orange tree spines as tension pins, Cotton cord used as selvedge ties & heddle thread. Features various patterns in white brocade, spaced evenly across length of textile. Patterns: from bottom (selvedge end) to top (beater end): Star, Corn plant with rings in between, spider, women with arms raised, dog footprint, 'pato de perro', pacaya leaf, figure eight, big eyed bird, butterfly, star, hummingbird sitting on corn plant or milpa. Textile produced entirely using number 22 white cotton thread produced in San Salvador, El Salvador.

Exhibited in Looms of our Grandmothers: Picb'il textiles from Guatemala, 16 May – 6 October 2019. The belt (2019.16) and cord (2019.17) were placed next to the demonstration loom to suggest how it was tied and used in situ.
Label noted for 2019.15-17 'These looms are tied to posts and the broad plastic strap worn around the seated weavers’ waist creates tension on the vertical warp threads. This example was made for the Museum on behalf of the cooperative Santa Maria de Chirripur.
Josefa Xi Coy de Quiix included many common patterns. These are (from the base of loom nearest the strap): Stars, Hummingbird on corn plant, Spider, Woman, Dog footprint, Pacaya leaf, Figure of eight, Big eyed bird and Butterfly.'
