Handmade wooden, textile & paper doll wearing traditional Q'eqchi' traje, or costume, from San Juan Chamelco in the Alta Verapaz of Guatemala. Doll is wooden base, with paper hands and feet. Wearing traditional Chamelqueno traje, or costume produced using scraps of used traje objects. Skirt is grey with blue and black bands. Includes yellow sash and white 'tzot' huipil or blouse. Doll has traditional tupuy headdress (long braided woolen cord of red and yellow) and wears a traditional napkin over her right shoulder. Includes red beaded necklace. Metal hoop with cord for hanging drilled into top of dolls head. Written, in sharpie, on back of doll is: "Recuerdo de Mujeres Tejedoras de San Juan Chamelco, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, CA. Gifted to Callie Vandewiele during her PhD field research to be given to the MAA to accompany textiles purchased as part of a Crowther-Beynon Grant from the cooperative Hijas de Aj Po'op B'atz. Designed to represent Q'eqchi' textiles in use.
