Description

P'ot. Long rectangular shawl made from hand-woven white cotton called picb’il with brown inlaid design on ends and in centre. Netted white fringe on both ends. Five brown bands of chevrons with hourglass figures as decoration. Weave and weft produced entirely using number 22 white cotton thread produced in San Salvador, El Salvador. Brown inlaid pattern produced using commercially dyed cotton thread.

Hand-woven white cotton shawl with fringe. Five brown bands of chevrons with hourglass figures as decoration. Minor staining on edge in centre, likely bled over from MN.0156.4.

Purchased by Callie Vandewiele during her PhD field research as part of a Crowther-Beynon Grant. Purchased from local textile vendor Amalia Gue, president of weaving group Ixb'alam Ke in the community of Samac outside of Coban.

Produced for sale to tourists and in international craft markets, non-indigenous Guatemalan fashion designer marketing picb'il textiles at the International Folk Arts Market in Santa Fe New Mexico. Pattern and style introduced by non-indigenous local marketer (Olga Reich) based on traditional patterns. Label produced by the same marketer.

Exhibited in Looms of our Grandmothers: Picb'il textiles from Guatemala, 16 May – 6 October 2019.
Label noted 'Many weavers depend on selling their picb’il textiles in international markets to help support their families. These scarves are examples of the products designed and made by weavers. Some communities work with intermediaries who have access to distant markets in New Mexico in the United States, Japan, and Belgium.'
