Description
Oblong case (1) made of some kind of treated leather/cloth over patterned pasteboard, with a pull-off lid. Contains a brass 'shelf edge' coin balance (2), comprising a flat strip with small projecting legs, one side to hold a coin and the other with a sliding cuboid weight and a scale with marked intervals at '5.3', '10.6', '18' and '21'.

Context (Analysis)
Cf. a very similar 'shelf edge' coin balance in the University of Oxford History of Science Museum (49217), dated to late eighteenth century England. As such, the Period field has here been filled as 'Post Medieval; late 18th century, and the Place field as 'Europe; British Isles; England'.
