A printed label, original to the object, is affixed to the underside of the lid on 1914.409.1, depicting a central figure of Justice personified with a torch and balance, and on the left side reads: 'T. Read IN St. Ann's Lane near Aldersgate LONDON. maketh & Selleth all sorts if Scales Weight & Steelyards', and on the right side reads: 'The Standard Weight of ye following Coins [and below is a list of coins by weight - see photograph] Note that each Grain of Gold is two pence at four pound pr. ounce'.

Description (Physical description)
Shagreen case (1) - a rectangular wooden case covered in shagreen, with brass hinges and double catches. The inside of the lid is padded with a red cloth, and the bottom with a red velvet-like textile (now very worn). There are two inner subdivisions in the corners dividing the inside into three compartments. There's also a printed paper label affixed to the underside of the lid (see separate Labels note).
Balance (2) - Steel balance arm with a central upright spike, hinged suspension loop and small plumb. A beige/off-white tassel is affixed to the suspension loop. Two circular brass pans are each affixed by three green cords to the ends of the balance arm.
Weights (3-6) - Six brass coin-shaped/disk weights of decreasing size. The smallest is stamped 'S.D 5.3' on both sides, the next '2.16 HALF GUINEA' on one side and is blank on the other, the next 'SD 10:6' on both sides, and the largest with 'L S 3.12' and a small crown symbol on one side and on the other (which is very worn) '[illegilbe] THREE POUND TWELVE'.
