Description (Physical description)
Japanned tin case (1) - oval tin case, surface treated with black japanning 'lacquer', with hinged lid. The inside of the lid is padded and covered with faded pink silk, and the inside bottom of the base covered with a green, coarsely-woven textile, though this has been slightly damaged by moths (likely historical). There is a central, curved tin partition which dives the inner space into three compartments.
Balance/set of scales (2) - a steel balancing arm in the centre of which is a thin spike, a hinged suspension loop, and small hinged plumb. A shallow circular brass pan is affixed to either end of the balancing arm via three green cords and a small wire suspension loop.
Five sheet weights (3-7) - thin, rectilinear sheets of brass, one larger and folded in half and the others flat of decreasing sizes. In decreasing size order, they are stamped; one with 48 small indentations in rows of six, one with six slightly larger circular indentations and a small lion rampant symbol, one with 12 small indentations in rows of four, one with three slightly larger circular indentations and a small lion rampant symbol, and one with three small indentations.
Five square weights (8-12) - square brass weights, stamped in decreasing size order with five, four, three, two, and one small circular indentations and with lions passant and a coffee pot-like symbol.
Two cylinder weights (13-14) - small brass cylindrical weights with flared tops and central protruding lugs. The larger is stamped '5 8' and with a lion passant, and the smaller is stamped '2 16' and with a lion passant.
