Description
Tortoise-shell/plastic oblong spectacles case. The wider end opens as a lid, with a hinge on one side and a now-broken steel clasp opposite. The join across the lid is decorated with bands of scrolled/foliate copper alloy sheet metal on either side, with a further band set along the centre of the top edge of the case/lid. One one side below the lid is a scrolled/foliate plaque with the letters 'H J v H' in the centre. The interior of the case is made of bone covered with blue velvet.

Found in a bag containing 23 spectacles/related objects (1898.219, 1903.206, 1916.64.1-2, 1916.65.1-2, 1918.165.1-2, 1918.166, 1920.34-1920.37, 1920.39, 1921.63.53, 1921.63.54, 1921.63.56.1-2, 1921.63.57, 1921.63.58, 1922.209, 1923.1303, TEMP.00837-TEMP.00841) with four handwritten card labels, two reading 'SPECTACLES' (though in different hands), one 'SPECTACLES CAMBS + BRISTOL', and one 'NO PROV'.

Given the initials 'H J v H' inscribed on this object, it may be very tentatively linked to the von Hügel family. Conversely, this link may be fairly unlikely given the object was donated to the Museum by John Jennings.
