Accession No

TEMP.00825

Description

Large manacle, chain and barrel padlock, most likely used as part of a set of leg irons. Comprises a corroded penannular shackle terminating in two closed loops. One loop is connected to both a single chain ring and a further run of four chain links. The other loop is connected to a single chain link which is in turn connected to the semicircular shackle of a large barrel padlock. The case of the padlock is quite damaged, with much of the top missing, revealing a much corroded and broken three-pin locking mechanism within. One terminus is also quite damaged, but appears to have been originally closed with a possible central piercing, whilst the other bears the design of the key wards.
