Context (Analysis)
Santon Hoard. Originally thought to have been found at Santon Downham, Suffolk but research by Rainbird Clarke quoted by Spratling shows it was found in the parish of Santon, on breckland close to the Thetford boundary, between the east end of the former Half-Moon Plantation and the site of St Helen' s Oratory (TL52 837873).
Research by Mansel Spratling. Spratling reference number MGS 102.

Description (Physical description)
A ovoid lump of bronze. Possibly slag or a piece of scrap metal.

Context (Amendments / updates)
The Spratling MGS number associated with this object is from the earlier, 1966, iteration of his unpublished thesis, Spratling MGS 102 - here a hand written note has been added to the catalogue. The updated, 2009, Spratling catalogue does not reference the lump of ?slag/scrap with the Spratling MGS 89 entry. Therefore at present only the Spratling MGS [1966] number has been added in the Other numbers field (see Context: References).

Context (Amendments / updates)
This object was not referenced in Spratling [2009] and it was only a hand written addition to the earlier 1966 iteration of his catalogue and it does not appear on either of the two catalogue cards that reference Spratling MGS 102 [1966] or 1897.227. It is possible that the lump should be be part of another object/collection of objects from the Santon hoard, until then it has been assigned this record.

Context (Amendments / updates)
This one piece of ?slag/scrap has been seen with the irregular lump of cast bronze - this is different to the note dated 22/01/2001 which stated there were two pieces of slag seen with the lump of cast bronze. It is possible that because the anvil from Santon (1897.227.1) has been incorrectly marked 'MGS 102' it was thus mistaken for the lump of cast bronze. Therefore both the correct irregular lump of bronze, 1897.227.58.1, and the lump of slag, 1897.227.58.2, were the two pieces noted as to accompany the object. However if another piece of slag is truly seen at a later date that can be definitely linked to that accession, this should be assigned with the suffix .3 and these details updated accordingly.
