Context (Analysis)
Santon Hoard. Originally thought to have been found at Santon Downham, Suffolk but research by Rainbird Clarke quoted by Spratling shows it was found in the parish of Santon, on breckland close to the Thetford boundary, between the east end of the former Half-Moon Plantation and the site of St Helen' s Oratory (TL52 837873).

Description (Physical description)
Accession Register: 'Four stout bronze hoops, L. 5".5, one with 1".2 wide projecting collar attached and one lose collar. Two small cup-like (?) moulds with concave bottom, and a small (semi-spherical) (?) moulds ([illegible])'.

There has been some confusion over the numbering of this object. It appears in the accession register listed under 1897.220. The object is also marked with this idno. However, it seems that this object was, at some point, then associated with the objects listed on the catalogue card for 1897.222. As the ferrule is marked and is in the accession register under 1897.220, this number has been retained as its accession number on the creation of this record.

The original Spratling MGS number associated with this object was found in the earlier 1966 iteration of his unpublished thesis, Spratling MGS 84. The updated, 2009, Spratling number is Spratling MGS 73 and this has now been added in the Other numbers field (see Context: References).
