Description

A set of four keys affixed to a circular ring through horizontal circular bows. One key is broken off halfway down the shank. The other three have cylindrical pipe shanks and single bits. One key has a flat bit with two key wards forming an 'S'-shape. The other two also have 'S'-shaped key ward patterns, but the bit is curved in a wave-like form.

Whilst the associated display board gives a 17th century date for these keys, the accession register entry states they are 18th century. As such, the Period field has been filled as 'Post Medieval; ?17th century; ?18th century'.

This object was found affixed to a wooden board. On the front is handwritten in pencil: 'A.1911.2. From 17th century. Keys on cloud [?] ring (iron). * C.A.S. 1912 [sic]', and on the rear: 'Bunch of keys. Bought Whittaker, March 16th, 1911.'
