Description
Iron lock and key. Rectangular spring lock [.1] with open rectangular protrusion. Decorated with incised zig zag pattern on both sides. The key [.2] has a loop at the end of the shaft, possibly for suspension. The shaft is decorated on one side with incised lines. The head of the key is forked with a square and open work rectangle before the shaft.

Context (Acquisition Details)
According to the Blue Book and the Accession Register, this object was donated by Baroness von Hügel in 1912. The object's mount suggest that the donor was Baron Anatole von Hügel. The 1912 Annual Report p.7 reads: 'Archaeological: [...] From Baroness Anatole von Hugel the Museum has received an interesting series of locks and keys of various dates, which she collected in Morocco and the Canary Islands in 1911.'

Accession Register description for 1912.381 - 1912.419 reads: 'A large door lock and key, and a series of ten spring padlocks of iron and brass, with iron keys of diverse forms and twenty-eight other keys of various designs.'

Context (Found together / assemblage)
A box with locks and keys from Morocco was found in Shorts in a pile of things 'to sort'.
The majority of these objects were found with 'Reg numbers' written in pencil on their wooden mount boards.

Context (Amendments / updates)
None of the 10 padlocks and keys accessioned as 1912.382-391 were marked with their IDNOs. Their mount was, however, marked with their Blue Book numbers. As they were not itemised in the Accession register for Archaeology, they have been assigned an IDNO in the order in which they appear in the Blue Book.
