Card Catalogue reads:

"Class VI 'Kichiku' (devils), Type 'Hannya' or 'Kijo' . The 'Hannya' represents a female devil, hence popularly 'Hannya' or female devil or 'Kijo' have become interchangeable terms, the application of one or other depending on the length of the horns and some subtle distinctions of expression. The mask really represents not 'Hannya' ie. wisdom, but the devil who is afraid of it." (Notes by Ridgeway)

The above description is 'WR's note' (see Cat. card) and is given the bibliographic reference 'H.L. Joly pp64-5. PLX' - this is likely to refer to H.L. Joly 'Japanese Masks', as referenced for items 1927.823-825. Furthermore, it is unclear whether this description refers to just 1927.826 A, or A-E. According to the Catalogue card, this item was 'sent [?]to me by Hamada of Kyoto', which presumably only refers to 1927.826 A.
