"Class VI 'Kichiku' (devils), Type 'Hannya' or 'Kijo' . The 'Hannya' represents a female devil, hence popularly 'Hannya' or female devil or 'Kijo' have become interchangeable terms, the application of one or other depending on the length of the horns and some subtle distinctions of expression. The mask really represents not 'Hannya' ie. wisdom, but the devil who is afraid of it." (Notes by Ridgeway)

Joly 'Japanese Masks', as referenced for items 1927.823-825. Furthermore, it is unclear whether this description refers to just 1927.826 A, or A-E. According to the Catalogue card, this item was 'sent [?]to me by Hamada of Kyoto', which presumably only refers to 1927.826 A.

Description (Physical description)
Ceramic Japanese Noh mask of a red faced demon (Oni). He is depicted with large, round eyes, which have been painted gold in the centre. Also painted gold are the tusks around the mouth. The face is wrinkled and the teeth are bared. The back of the mask has a ceramic bar, which allows it to be suspended.
