"Class VI 'Kichiku' (devils), Type 'Hannya' or 'Kijo' . The 'Hannya' represents a female devil, hence popularly 'Hannya' or female devil or 'Kijo' have become interchangeable terms, the application of one or other depending on the length of the horns and some subtle distinctions of expression. The mask really represents not 'Hannya' ie. wisdom, but the devil who is afraid of it." (Notes by Ridgeway)

Joly 'Japanese Masks', as referenced for items 1927.823-825. Furthermore, it is unclear whether this description refers to just 1927.826 A, or A-E. According to the Catalogue card, this item was 'sent [?]to me by Hamada of Kyoto', which presumably only refers to 1927.826 A.

Description (Physical description)
Miniature porcelain Noh mask. The mask is female with painted red/orange lips and black hair along the side of the face. There are two black discs at the top of the forehead, which are meant to represent shaved eyebrows. There is a ceramic bar across the back of the mask, which would allow it to be suspended.
